The Three Essence Mantras སྙིང་པོ་རྣམ་གསུམ།

April 29-30 10am-4:30

In the Yungdrung Bön tradition, the three essence mantras or Nyingpo NamSum, collectively embody the entirety of the buddha Tönpa Shenrab’s teachings.

It is said that the Yungdrung Bön teachings are like an ocean, which contains within it 84,000 different teachings.  These 84,000 can be condensed into the Nine Ways of Bön.  These Nine Ways can be further condensed into the three views of sutra, tantra and dzogchen which can be further distilled into the Three Essence Mantras.  That is why they are called the ‘Essence’ (Nyingpo).

In their traditional form, these mantras are recited: AH OM HUNG A AH KAR SA LÉ Ö AH YANG OM DU: The Essence Mantra of the Bön ku. OM MA TRI MU YÉ SA LÉ DU: The Essence Mantra of the Dzog ku. AH KAR AH MÉ DU TRI SU NAK PO ZHI ZHI MAL MAL SO HA: The Essence Mantra of the Trulku

During the preliminary practices each of these three essence mantras are recited a minimum of 100,000 times. However, It is common for even Bönpo lay-people to recite each of these mantras a minimum of 108 times every day, even when the practitioner is not actively completing a “ngondro”.

Each mantra has its own meaning, practice and visualization. To fully receive the benefits and blessings of reciting the three essence mantras, it is essential to receive transmission and instructions from an authentic and qualified Bön lama.  Thus the immeasurable benefits of these mantras become available to us, and our spiritual development will increase.
