Basic Tibetan Reading and Translation Classes

Basic Tibetan Reading Class starts May 16th and is held every Tuesday thru July 25th
Tibetan Translation Class starts May 18th and is held every Thursday thru July 27th
7 am to 8 am (Pacific Time) on ZOOM.
The Basic Tibetan Reading Class of the summer semester 2023, consists of 3 months of lectures. Each Tuesday lecture is one hour long. The Basic Tibetan Reading class will provide an opportunity to learn reading of Tibetan texts, building vocabulary and structuring of simple sentences. We are creating an opportunity for all who are interested in learning this. When structuring sentences, we provide guidance and support to make proper sentences. We will also cover common grammatical mistakes aiding the students comprehension. In this basic class, we will focus on improving reading from the basic level which will be most appropriate for the beginner. We will learn vocabulary and make simple sentences. Each class will provide you with the opportunity to improve your level of reading, writing and comprehension of Tibetan texts.
In this class we will provide reading material in the form of stories in Tibetan. As we did in our previous sessions on the Basic Tibetan Reading Class, we will focus more on the reading part. When you read perfectly, understanding will be easier. Reading is very important if you want to learn the Tibetan language. It will improve your pronunciation, vocabulary and sentence structure. Thus, this Summer Semester will be one of the best opportunities if you want to improve your reading and basic knowledge of theTibetan language.
Eligibility to join this class; one must have a basic knowledge of Tibetan such as the Tibetan alphabet and vowels.
The Tibetan Translation Class of the Summer Semester 2023 is 3 months long. Each Thursday lecture is one hour long. In this session we are planning to teach basic translation from Tibetan into English. This involves defining and translating the text, translating each word, sentence structuring, understanding the Tibetan text, and its conceptual translation. We are focusing more on the basic level that deals with the definition of the words, understanding of the text and translating it into English. Our efforts will be to focus more on the Tibetan portion because when the concept is clear regarding the source-text, it will provide more opportunities to select a more appropriate text and choice of words during the translation process.
Therefore, in this session we will continue the “Elegant Saying on the Gradual Path” by Kundun Sonam Yungdrung. In the last session we already covered a few topics and will continue where we left off. To prepare, students will need to read those texts again and again. When we deal with verse translation it is very important to be clear about the concepts. Once we are well aware of the source-text, it will be easier for us to translate it into the target language.
We will continue with the “Elegant Saying on the Gradual Path” because the author used a very simple and easily understandable language. It carries the deep meaning and profound insight of Bon-teaching. Along with the translation we will obtain a basic awareness of Bon-teaching as well.
