Losar Eve Dokpa & Losar Morning Sang Rituals
…………Losar Eve is one of the important celebrations of the Tibetan New Year festival. It is a time to purify and send off all the negativity from the previous year and to welcome the positive possibilities of what is arriving in the approaching new year.
…………In 2022, the Tibetan Losar falls on the 3rd of March. Traditional preparation begins on Losar Eve (March 2nd) with the performance of the Dokpa ritual. “Dokpa.” means turning back obstacles. During the ritual, we will offer a ransom to the Lu spirits to carry away all negativities including evil spirits and misfortunes from the past year. In preparation for the arrival of the Tibetan Losar, we will summon the fire energy of the Dokpa ritual to clear all negative obstructions. Then we will invite the positive blessings of peace, wisdom, compassion, love and prosperity to manifest fully in all aspects of our lives throughout the coming year.
………….Early the next morning on March 3rd, the first day of Losar, we will join together to do the Sang Ritual. Sang, begins with a short purification using both the elements of water and fire. It is an ancient form of ritual on the Tibetan plateau and its surrounding areas. Often a large fumigation fire is utilized in the early hours of dawn to complete the purification . If building such a fire is not possible, smoke from incense will complete the purification process. A Clearing of the Obstacles will follow using golden colored mustard seeds and the arrows of mantra to pacify or clear any remaining hindrances. Then, prayers are offered to the Yungdrung Bön Deities and Protectors. Songs of invocation requesting blessings for family, friends and the beings throughout our world are performed using the traditional musical Instruments of the Nga and Sil-Nyen are offered to the Enlightened Protector, Sidpe Gyalmo, the Queen of the Universe and Yeshe Walmo.
………You are invited to join us in the purification of all the negative events of the past year as well as our own internal toxins. Then, free from the heavy burden of negativity, join us in an auspicious welcoming celebration of the new positive possibilities of the coming year, the Year of the Water Tiger.
