Sang and Lungta Prayer for 2022

The New Year is a time when we send off all the negativity from the previous year and welcome the positive possibilities of what is to come.   In this spirit, Chaphur Rinpoche will lead a traditional Bön Sang (smoke offering) Ritual and will also give a teaching on raising the Wind Horse flag (Lung-ta) – a practice that represents all aspects of vitality. 

Sang Chöd is the first of the four generosities,  the core of daily practice. The smoke – which is traditionally juniper – is transformed through the intent and prayer of the practitioner into an offering that fulfills the needs and desires of all four classes of beings (Buddha’s/bodhisattvas, beings of the six realms, obstructive spirits and local spirits of the land). Sang is especially relevant in heralding in the new year as the smoke is a form of purification for the practitioner.

The Wind Horse (Lung-ta) carries the “Wish Fulfilling Jewel of Enlightenment” and is the most prevalent symbol used on prayer flags. It represents good fortune. It signifies the uplifting of life force energies and the increase of opportunity and success in all endeavors. When one’s Lungta is low, obstacles constantly arise. When Lungta is high, good opportunities abound. Raising up Wind Horse prayer flags is one of the best ways to increase  one’s Lungta energy.
